Law Enforcement Awarded AEDs

The Sidney Police Department and Cheyenne County Sheriff's Department have additional assets in their toolboxes.

Both departs were awarded Automated External Defibrillator (AED) units

The Office of Emergency Health Systems was responsible for the project oversight of a Helmsley Charitable Trust $6.4 million grant, which was used to equip law enforcement agencies statewide with next generation "connected" Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

The Helmsley Nebraska First Responder AED Project supplied approximately 2,500 devices and equipment to County Sheriff's Offices, Police Departments, the Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Game and Parks, Nebraska Fire Marshal's Office, Nebraska National Forest, Nebraska Brand Commission and Campus Police Agencies across Nebraska.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office and the Sidney Police Department both applied for and received AED's through this grant.  Sheriff Adam Frerichs and Chief Aikens attended AED training on June 10 at Mid Plains Community College in Ogallala. They then came back to their respective offices and trained staff on the use of the AED's with a supplied training video.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office received 10 LIFEPAK CR2 Defibrillator AED's from the grant, allowing us to equip every patrol vehicle and the SWAT truck with AED's.  The next generation "connected" refers to the LIFENET System feature that allows the AED's to connect to WIFI.

The AED's connect at least once a month to send AED status; sends email notifications when battery or electrodes need replaced; configures setup option for the defibrillators; installs software updates; sends patient data, such as heart rhythm, to emergency responders before they arrive on scene; sends patient data reports to medical personnel or the receiving hospital; instructs a lost defibrillator to send its approximate location and beep frequently.

The AED's were received in early September and are now in service with every deputy.
