Leyton Warriors Compete At Best in the West

Leyton’s Warrior Track and Field teams traveled on Tuesday up to Scottsbluff to compete in the annual Best in the West Classic against the best track and field athletes in the region. Leyton’s boy’s team placed 11th overall, with 18 points while the girls team finished 12th with 23 overall points.

Against powerhouse Class B teams like Sidney and Chadron, the Leyton boys held their own and were able to bring home a few medals. Junior Justin Ernest placed fifth in the 800 Meters with a time of 2:05.74, a personal record, while the 4X100 Meter Relay team (M. Shepard, KJ Bush, Justin Ernest, Mason Reimers) had a sixth place finish and the 4X800 Meter Relay team (C. Rummel, G. Tretter, C. Carter, J. Ernest) placed fifth. Senior Mason Reimers also placed third in the Long Jump with a distance of 20’ 1”.

Outstanding performances by the girls included freshman Shawnee Gamble placing fourth in the 400 Meters with a personal-best time of 1:01.44, junior Axi Benish placing third in the 1600 Meters with a personal-best time of 5:39.42, freshman Zaili Benish placing second in the 300 Meter Hurdles with a personal best time of 48.08 and placing sixth in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Leyton was scheduled to compete in the MAC High School Conference Meet on Tuesday May 3 at Bayard High School.
