Raiders Take State

Deer Wins All-Class Gold in 400 Meter

Sidney’s Red Raider Boy’s Track and Field Team earned the Class B State Championship for the first time since 2015, earning 66 points in the competition and besting second-place Waverly by 14 points.

Sidney senior Mitchell Deer was the big story at the Meet, battling blisters on his feet to win the 400 Meters in 49.42 seconds. After the C and D competitions ended, Deer learned that he had the top time across all classes, and became the fifth Sidney High School athlete to accomplish the feat.

Last year, junior Jacob Dowse won the all-class gold medal in High Jump. Sidney’s other all-class winners were Dale Kinney in Shot Put in 1949, David King in the 440 Yard Dash in 1965, Paul Hamilton in High Jump in 2005 and 2006.

But it was a total team effort by the Sidney boys that lead to their State Championship. Outstanding performances in all the events they competed in produced 66 points, a very large amount for a state meet. The last time Sidney won the Class B State Championship in 2015, they scored 42 points.

Sidney Track and Field coach Matt McKay said, “These guys are the hardest working group of guys I’ve ever seen.”

The results show that statement to be true. The 4X800 Meter Relay team of Daniel Bashtovoi, Mitch Deer, Treyson Johnstone and Cameron Brauer broke the Sidney High School record three times during the season, the last time being on Wednesday at the State Meet. The Sidney boys finished with a time of 7:56, just tenths of a second away from the State Meet record. This is a group of athletes that is never satisfied, and always pushes for a better performance every time on the track.
