4th Graders Attend Ag Literacy Program

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension facilitated Animals Inside and Out, an ag literacy program for youth in Cheyenne and Deuel Counties. Fourth graders from Sidney, Leyton, Creek Valley, and South Platte all attended the event that was hosted at the old Lodgepole School Building. Animals Inside and Out is an ag literacy program that helps students learn about the systems (muscular, digestive, etc.) of an animal. Throughout the day students rotated to a variety of different stations that gave them an opportunity for a hands-on experience related to body systems of animals. Students were able to see a real cow heart and reproductive tract and learn hands on how they help the animals. They were also able to learn about animal management and how farmers and ranchers help keep their animals healthy. Other topics included healthy feed rations, the muscular and skeletal systems, along with how we use animal by-products. One teacher that attended said, "My students absolutely loved the program! It was fun to watch the kids make the connections between what they had just finished reading in class and what they were seeing firsthand. Thanks again for providing us with such amazing opportunities!" This program was provided by UNL Extension with support from the Village of Lodgepole.
