Lady Warriors Rebound Against Hay Springs

After a disappointing loss against Perkins County to end 2022 and blemish their unbeaten record, Leyton's Lady Warrior Basketball team rebounded and got back on the winning track with a big win against unbeaten Hay Springs Saturday afternoon.

The game started close with both teams battling hard, but the Hay Springs girls were able to get better looks and their shots to fall and took a 16-to-9 lead at the end of the first period. Leyton's offense got hot in the second quarter, cutting through the Lady Hawk's defense and putting up 19 points in the quarter to go into the half leading 28-to-25. The Lady Hawks did a good job limiting sophomore standout and leading scorer Zaili Benish in the first half, but Leyton sophomores Shawnee Gamble and Sydney Fortune were able to score well for the Lady Warriors and give them a lead.

Hay Springs battled back through the third quarter and took a 40-to-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. But Leyton owned the final period, with their defense doing a great job of limiting Hay Springs scoring opportunities while their offense put up 15 points in the frame to seal the 53-to-49 win.

Gamble led all scorers with 21 points in the game, with Hay Springs senior Samantha Toof tallying 17 points. Zaili Benish had 15 points in victory for Leyton.

Leyton is next scheduled to travel to Bayard for a match up against the Lady Tigers on Thursday, followed by a home contest against Potter-Dix on Friday.
