Sidney's 9-and-4 Red Raider Boys Basketball team traveled for a match up with the 7-and-5 Gothenburg Swedes, and needed an overtime period to get past the Swedes, 56-to-52. A close battle throughout, the contest featured Sidney rallies in both halves, and seven three-point hits by junior Isak Doty.
Gothenburg started hot, with their offense beating the Sidney defense and pulling out to an 11-to-3 lead, but Sidney finished the first quarter with a strong run to get within one point, 14-to-13, at the end of the period. Sidney took its first lead of the night early in the second quarter on a Doty three-point shot, and built on the lead to take a 28-to-24 advantage into the halftime break.
Sidney continued their good play into the third period, expanding their lead until Gothenburg battled back late in the period to get within one at 40-to-39 going into the fourth quarter. Gothenburg took the lead early in the fourth quarter, and then the two teams battled for the rest of the final quarter. Junior Luke Uhlir stole an inbounds pass for the Red Raiders, and broke away down the court to put up two points and tie the game at 49-to-49. The Swedes set themselves for the final shot of the game, but senior Wes Geiken missed his shot for the Swedes, sending the contest into overtime.
It was all Sidney in the extra period, with the Red Raiders taking a lead and holding off the Swedes, and securing a 56-to-52 victory. The win moves Sidney's record to 10-and-4 on the year. Doty led all scorers with 23 points, with 21 coming via three-point shots. Senior Jacob Dowse had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the double double.
Sidney was scheduled to host Yuma, Co., on Saturday, but the game never tipped off as the Yuma team had to turn back their bus on their way to Sidney due to the snowy road conditions from Wednesday's winter storm. Sidney was next scheduled to host Torrington on Tuesday.
