Two Big Wins And A Tough Loss For Lady Warriors

Leyton's Lady Warrior Girls Basketball team lost a close 43-to-42 contest to Haxtun on Saturday, after two big wins earlier in the week.

The Lady Warriors first traveled to Harrisburg to match up with Banner County on Tuesday, January 24, and blasted through the winless Lady Wildcats, opening a 39-to-3 lead at the halftime break. The Lady Warrior defense held the Lady Wildcats to just five second-half points as they cruised to a 59-to-8 win. Sophomore Zaili Benish dropped 27 points, including 5 three-point hits, in the win.

On Thursday, the Lady Warriors played host to the Hemingford Lady Bobcats, and the game started slowly with the defenses stopping both teams from establishing any offensive rhythm. But that changed in the second quarter as Leyton's offense took off, and built a 27-to-14 lead at the half. The scoring pace again slowed in the second half, but Leyton's lead was too much to overcome, and the Lady Warriors took the 48-to-23 win. Benish again led the scoring fro Leyton with 25 points in the victory.

On Saturday, Leyton hosted a tough Haxtun team, and the Lady Fightin' Bulldogs stymied the Lady Warrior offense in the first half, building a 26-to-13 lead at the intermission. But the Leyton girls fought back hard, putting up 18 points in the third to trim the lead to 34-to-31 at the start of the final period. Leyton outscored Haxtun in the fourth period, but it was not enough, and the visitors took away the one-point victory 43-to-42. Leyton moves to 11-and-4 on the season, and was scheduled to travel to Sedgwick County on Wednesday.
