Richard James Bules

On Thursday, April 6, 2023, Richard James Bules, age 84, of Sidney, NE passed on to be with the Lord. Mr. Bules passed in the night peacefully at Sidney Regional Medical Center. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, June 2, 2023, at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney, NE with Pastor Corey Jenkins officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Nebraska Army National Guard Honor Guard, the VFW Post #610, DAV Chapter #40, and the American Legion Post #17.

Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Thursday from 1-6:00 P.M. to leave condolences for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to Faith Methodist Church in Sidney or the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department.

Richard was born on April 30, 1938 to Karl Jacob and Katherine Mae (Strasrypka) Bules in Sidney, NE. Richard was one of seven children born to the Bules family which included Karl Jr., Donna, Wayne, Shirley, Teddy, and Alice.

Richard's family was raised on the family farm East of Gurley, NE, where Richard grew to assist his parents, siblings and brother-in-law Jerry Jurgens in the daily farm work into his 80 years, while also doing his regular job. Farming was the thing he loved dearly and was pleased to work for his nephew and family, the Karl Bules III family. As a young man, he also worked in several gas service stations and oil well pulling units particularly in the Kimball, NE area. Richard also was manager of FarMor Service station, supervisor at Simplot Industries, Lincoln Grain and retired from Cabela's Maintenance after serving for 16 years.

On October 17, 1961, Richard was inducted into the United States Army as a Pvt E-1 serving overseas in Germany and along the Czech border. Richard was honored to be chosen in 1963 to march in the NATO Armed Forces Parade in Bremerhaven, Germany, where military from many countries, many of whom did not speak English, were honored as well. The fellow service people traded their various medals with each other in celebration and with fond memories of this time. Shortly thereafter, on October 4, 1963, Richard was released to return home and served in the Reserves until his honorable discharge on September 30, 1967, attaining the rank of PPC E3 (P). Included in his awards is Expert (Rifle M-14 and Marksman (MG m60)). Richard was a member of the DAV, the American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW.

In 1963, Richard met Constance H. Minshall. One May 5, 1967, they were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sidney. To this union one daughter, Angela, was born. This year they would have been married 56 years.

Richard is survived by his wife, Constance; daughter, Angela Hobbs and husband Clay; grandson, Connor L. Hobbs; sisters Shirley Jurgens and Alice Ford and husband Jim; brother Karl Bules Jr; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Katherine; his brothers Wayne and wife Virginia and Teddy Bules; brothers-in-law Jerry B. Jurgens and Leon Schwartz; sister, Donna L. Murray and husband Dr. Edward C. Murray; his in-laws, Violet and Henry Minshall; and brothers- in-law Malvin Minshall and wife Shirley and James E. Minshall and wife Gloria.

Richard's 85th birthday would have been on April 30th. In his words, "We will see one another again when we meet in heaven."
