Living Memorial Gardens Ready For Season

Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph

The Living Memorial Gardens at Legion Park were treated to a good clean-up and preparation Saturday morning by a big group of volunteers that pitched in and worked hard to get the Garden ready for the season. There were gifts and refreshments for those that came out, and the gardens were cleared out of dead brush and debris that had collected over the especially harsh winter.

The Memorial Gardens have been a center of serene beauty in Sidney for over thirty years, and a dedicated group of volunteers work very hard to keep the gardens beautifully maintained. The site originally was the location of the Sidney Municipal Swimming Pool in the first half of the 20th century. The garden repurposed the municipal pool, and memorializes the role of Sidney and its community members and the role they have played in American history. The Memorial Garden also has Nebraska's first Christmas Box Angel. There are currently over 100 Christmas Box Angels around the world, dedicated to those who have lost a child.

The weather was perfect for the clean-up on Saturday, and the entire Sidney community thanks the volunteers who take the time and effort to keep such a special place meticulously maintained every year.
