Leyton Warriors Fall in Opener to Hemingford, 58-18
August 31, 2023
DALTON-- Leyton's Warrior Football team opened their 2023 season at home Thursday evening, and the visiting Hemingford Bobcats gave the Warriors more than they could handle, dominating the home team in a 58-to-18 win.
Leyton received the ball and started first on offense, but a few miscues with snaps and a tough Bobcat defense forced a punt on the first possession. An illegal block in the back penalty followed by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty put the Bobcats deep in their own territory. Leyton caught a big break when Hemingford fumbled the ball and the Warriors were able to jump on it and take over close to the Bobcats' goal line. Two plays later, Leyton senior quarterback Trenton Rushman connected on a short pass to senior Kaleb Borges, who followed a block by junior Isaac Lipska then fought his way into the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was missed, and Leyton had a 6-to-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, and the Warriors had no answers trying to figure out the Hemingford offense. Their line was effective in opening holes, and their fast and big backs churned out yardage and punishing hits. The Bobcats quickly scored and took the lead, and at halftime the Bobcats lead 22-to-12.
It was the third quarter that doomed the Warriors as Hemingford received the ball first in the second half, and reeled off 26 unanswered points. 10 more points followed in the fourth quarter, while the Leyton squad was only able to manage one more score in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats took the victory, 58-to-18.
Senior Trenton Rushman completed 9 of 20 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors, and led the rushing attack with 10 carries for 53 yards. The Bobcats' running attack tore up the Leyton defense, with three players, Cody Galles, Jacob Bryner and Talon Payne each gaining over 100 yards on the day. All seven of the Bobcat's touchdowns came via the run.
Leyton tries to get on the winning side of the ledger on Friday as they travel to Kimball to take on a Longhorn team that lost their opener to Hyannis, 58-to-20.
