Hot and cold

Below average temperatures at Best of the West fail to stop Linneman, Robb and Raiders

In a welcome change from recent weeks, student athletes finally took center stage over the weather at the Best of the West Classic track meet in Scottsbluff on Tuesday.

Though the high temperature of 43-degrees was about 20-degrees below normal and winds from the northwest were steady at 14 mph, the skies remained mostly sunny.

“The cold weather was a problem for us, but it was the same problem for everyone,” said Sidney head coach John Ganser. “I’m just very pleased with how we competed, especially after 11 days without a meet.”

Among the local high schools to compete were Sidney, Potter Dix, Leyton and Creek Valley. The Best of the West Classic takes only athletes that have qualified by previous performance.

In the girls competition, Morgan Linneman and Kali Robb picked up four and three gold medals respectively. Linneman won the 200 and 400-meter dash’s to earn two individual golds. She was also a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay and the 4 x 400 meter winning relay teams.

Robb won the shot put and discus and was a member of the winning 4 x 100-meter relay.

“I was pleased my shot put,” Robb said. “I just wanted to beat 40 (feet) and I did that.”

Robb’s winning throw was 40-9.

In addition to Robb and Linneman, Gabbie Addleman and Karissa Segelke earned gold as part of the 4 x 100 squad.

In the 4 x 400 meter relay, Linneman partnered with Abby Heller, Segelke and Genessa Schilz for gold.

“Our handoffs went really well that’s the important thing,” said Robb after the 4-by-100.

As for the cold, Robb just shrugged that off.

“I think it’s a mental game when you don’t get the conditions that allow you to do what you want to do,” she said. “You still have to compete.”

The Sidney girls team also had two other individual podium finishes. Alli Ehler finished third in the 1600-meter run while Segelke took bronze in the 100-meter hurdles.

In the girls triple jump, Leyton’s Kaitlyn Berner had a solid fifth-place finish. Also for Leyton, Kassandra Harris narrowly missed out on a podium with fourth in the discuss throw.

Kaidee Livingstone of Potter-Dix, the leading qualifier in the pole vault, finished eighth.

On the boys side, Logan Lewis and Lucas Rosenbaum each reached the podium on multiple occassions for Sidney. Lewis finished third in the 200-meter dash and second in the shot put. Meanwhile, Rosenbaum was the silver medalist in the pole vault.

“I’m a little dissapointed in my vault,” said Rosenbaum. “I wanted to get 13 feet. I was almost there I just came down a little on that last one.”

Both Lewis and Rosenbaum were on the 4 x 100 meter relay team which took second place. Also earning silver on the relay team were Michael Muggli and Cole Stiles.
