BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Barrett scores 47 to help boost Peetz to victory

Casey Barrett scored 47 points to help lead the Peetz High School boys’ basketball team to an 84-68 victory over Pawnee in its 1A North Central League opener on Friday night.

Peetz improved to 3-1 overall, while Pawnee slipped to 2-3.

Barrett made five three-pointers in the contest and was 18 for 23 from the free-throw line.

“We won a toughly contested battle where a lot of fouls were called,” said Peetz head coach Jim Gardiner. “It was a good, tough league win on the road for us.”

The Bulldogs led just 39-33 at halftime.

“I’m proud of the kids in the second half for playing better defense,” Gardiner added.

Garrin Cox added nine points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs, while teammate Bradey Holtz contributed six points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

For the game, Peetz was 32 for 45 from the free-throw stripe.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday night at home against Haxtun.

Leyton 66,

South Platte 22

Leyton limited South Platte to single-digit points in each of the four quarters en route to its first victory of the season in its D2 District 11 opener on Friday.

Senior Cody McKay scored 26 points – including a 13-for-15 effort from the field – and added five rebounds. Teammate Rhett Dye added 10 points for the Warriors.

Leyton, which led 38-11 at the intermission, improved to 1-3, while South Platte slipped to 0-4.

James Rushman and Drew Brenner contributed seven and six assists respectively, while teammate Zach Hellie and Kenny Ernest blocked four shots apiece.

Leyton next plays on Tuesday night at Potter-Dix.

Potter-Dix 56,

Creek Valley 50

Paxton 75, Potter-Dix 41

Potter-Dix split its games over the weekend to move to 2-2 on the season.

On Friday, the Coyotes used a 14-10 advantage in the fourth quarter to pull off the win at Creek Valley. They took a 42-40 lead into the final period before posting the win.

For Creek Valley, which slipped to 2-2, Colin Brott had 16 points and seven rebounds and teammate Breet Godfrey chipped in 11 points. Dana McConnell pulled down six rebounds for the Storm.

On Saturday, Potter-Dix fell behind 34-16 by halftime and couldn’t recover. Cody Blackwell had 18 points for Paxton, and teammate Chance Morland chipped in 17 more.
