The local charity presented 125 baskets in total to area residents, including those delivered to Cheyenne Villa and Sioux Villa, with help from the city street department. • Across the Fence: Last Christmas

    M. Timothy Nolting|Dec 20, 2013

As the unofficial historian in the family, one would think that I should keep a detailed journal of all family events. Unfortunately I do not. I had a great-aunt Lydia who did just that and her records of family gatherings contain details that most folks would think were unnecessary. Her written accounts of weddings describe the bride's gown, the groom's suit, the cake, wedding colors and decorations, who was in attendance, the weather, the food and even the make and model of the car that the...

  • A Christmas story

Rev. Thomas Hyde, First United Methodist, Sidney|Dec 20, 2013

Everyone loves a good story, and Christmas has the best ones. What's your favorite Christmas movie? Is it A Wonderful Life, as George finds out that his life has meaning? Or is it Home Alone as Kevin defends his home and learns the value of family? Or perhaps it's The Christmas Story with the stern warning to Ralphie his wished for BB gun will "shoot your eye out!" I like the classic Christmas Carol, where Scrooge, "... a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!"...

  • Desk dedication

    Shannon Ireland|Dec 20, 2013

The Sidney Public Library received the donation to get a new desk about a year ago. The previous desk had been in place for 45 years, and with advancements in computers and technology, a desk more suited to those needs was needed for the various wires. The Martha Hammond Walker memorial desk was put in at the end of September. "This was just a God send," Doris Jensen of the Library said. Pictured are Walker's family members; Warren Johnson, Doug Armbruster, Dan Rowen, Julie Armbruster, Marilee... Full story

  • Sidney alters zoning, parking regulations

    Caitlin Sievers|Dec 20, 2013

The city council recently approved three ordinances which changed some city regulations and allowances. One raises height restrictions on buildings from 50 to 80 feet in C3 or heavy commercial zones, which would accommodate some new developments. Another ordinance will allow a list of new approved activities in agricultural areas, including taxidermy, vineyards, crop production and orchards. These were all activities that the city thought should obviously be legal under zoning, but were somehow left off Sidney’s allowed uses charts. Also to b...

    Caitlin Sievers|Dec 20, 2013

The city of Sidney signed a supplemental agreement for the Deadwood Trail project with the State Department of Roads at this week’s city council. This agreement locks in additional funds the department of roads has agreed to supply for the hiking, biking and walking trail project, with the department providing 80 percent of the funds and the city providing 20 percent as well as removing the $500,000 cap for federal funds. The agreement demonstrates how long this project has been in the works, as the department of roads and the city entered i...
