SIDNEY--Coming into the 2024 season, there were plenty of questions surrounding the Sidney Red Raider Football team. Success will do that, as last year's team had an outstanding season and qualified for the State Tournament. How would this year's team perform without last year's standouts? Graduated seniors Isak Doty, Luke Holly, McGuire Rolls, and others were the keys to the Raider's outstanding success last year. Many of these questions were answered Friday night with a dominant performance in...
PEETZ--The Potter-Dix Coyotes and Peetz Bulldogs kicked off the 2024 season with an opening-day matchup in Peetz on Thursday, August 29. The two teams are powerhouses in their respective leagues, and the matchup proved to be an exciting contest, with Potter-Dix coming out on top, 62-to-43. Peetz received the opening kickoff but had difficulty getting anything going on offense. They were forced to punt on fourth down, but a bad snap prevented a punt, and Potter-Dix took over for their first posse...
SIDNEY--The Lady Raiders lost a few key members of their 2023 team that finished 18-and-15, and it looks like there will be a learning curve as Sidney re-tools the Volleyball team for this season. Although the Lady Raiders will have to do without standouts like Karsyn Leeling, Chloe Ahrens, and Payton Schrotberger, Sidney still has a strong team that should be very competitive. Unfortunately, Sidney had to host one of the best teams in the region in its home opener on August 29, which exposed...
FLEMING, COLO.--Leyton's Warrior Football team traveled to Fleming Friday night for their first excursion into the world of 6-Man Football, and if their performance Friday night is any indicator, it looks like the Warriors will have no trouble adapting to the free-wheeling and open style of the 6-man game. The Warriors opened strong, piling up 22 points in the opening quarter while shutting down the Wildcat offense. The Warriors added 10 more points in the second quarter to take a 32-to-0 lead...
POTTER-- Leyton's Lady Warrior Volleyball team started their season strong with two convincing straight-set match wins over Minatare and Potter-Dix in Potter on Thursday, August 29. Leyton Head Coach Natasha Haupt's girls had a very productive summer with camps and team practices, and the Lady Warriors again look to be a force in D2-11. Leyton opened against Minatare, and had little trouble against the Lady Indians, taking the first set 25-to-13 and the second set 25-to-8. Potter-Dix was also...
SIDNEY--Friday, August 23, was a big day for Sidney High School sports, as the Lady Raider Volleyball Team and the Red Raider Football team each held scrimmages as part of their final preparations for the upcoming 2024 Fall Sports schedule. Weather forecasts showed big storms coming through the area Friday night, so the Football scrimmage started earlier than scheduled, at 5:30 p.m. rather than 6 p.m. The Volleyball team got their scrimmage in and a lot of work was put in by a young Lady Raider...
SIDNEY--Sidney's High School and Middle School Cross Country teams descended upon the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds on Thursday for their annual pre-season scrimmage, and a big crowd of supporters turned out for the exciting event. The high school and middle school athletes looked great as they traversed the course and gave it their all in the hot afternoon sun. The High School Cross Country team will have its first action on August 29 at the Panhandle Classic in Scottsbluff, and both the Middle...
PEETZ--On Saturday, August 24, the Peetz Bulldogs hosted the Prairie Mustangs and Otis Bulldogs for a three-way scrimmage. Originally scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday night's rains caused the starting time to be moved back to 1 p.m. The change in time had the field drier and less prone to damage, but the teams then had to deal with 97-degree heat and very little wind. A good crowd from Otis and Prarie joined the Peetz faithful in watching the final preparations before the start of the season. The...
DALTON--It's a new era for Leyton Football, and the Warriors will have to make the adjustments necessary to get up to speed in 6-man Football rather than the 8-man game they played for many years. Along with the change to 6-Man, the Warriors have a new head Coach in Cody Gamble. Gamble said he does have experience coaching 6-Man Football, but that was at a junior-high level. The high school game is a bit different, with stronger and faster players that test all of the schemes a coach can put in...
DALTON--Leyton's Lady Warrior Volleyball team had a banner season last year, winning the D2 District 11 Title and qualifying for the State Tournament. They could not get past Stuart in the first round but gained valuable experience and are ready for another run this year. Head Coach Natasha Haupt said that her girls had a lot of practice and playing opportunities over the summer, and will be ready to go when they open their season with a triangular against Minatare and Potter-Dix at Potter on...
POTTER--Potter-Dix's Lady Coyote Volleyball team had a strong season last year, finishing 19-and-15 with a strong close to the season. This year, Head Coach Keri Mendoza sees a young and athletic squad ready to build on last year's success and better their 2nd place showing in D2-11. It will be a challenge with many strong competitors on the schedule, but the girls have been putting in the work and improving their court coverage and serving skills. On Thursday, August 29, the Lady Coyotes will...
POTTER- After an undefeated regular season and a big win in the first round of the playoffs against Red Cloud last year, the Coyotes were bounced from the State Tournament by Parkview Christian. The Coyotes are back this year and are re-tooling to get over the hump and play for a State Championship. The Coyotes have made playoff runs the past four seasons, with at least one playoff victory during each run. The Coyotes return four key starters and are bolstered by a talented group of...

Two staff members were on hand to assist youngsters at the archery range and to give the children a free photo download of their attempts at hitting the floating targets. Kids Duck Decoys were also available for children who came to the store with their...
Area High School students have returned to class after their summer break, and they are all ready to kick off a new Fall Sports season. Changes such as Leyton's Warrior Football team moving to 6-Man football from 8-Man Football will make things exciting, and seeing if the Sidney Red Raider football team can repeat the success they had last year will also be a big story this autumn. Along with football, the two big Volleyball stories will be the Leyton Lady Warriors trying to match their success...
Addison Weathers made a big impression in Western Nebraska American Legion baseball in his first year at the helm of the Sidney Post 17 teams. He was named All-Conference Head Coach of the Year for the Junior team after compiling a 21-17-1 record, according to Gamechanger. Weathers took over Post 17 teams with plenty of talent but seemed to lack focus over the past few seasons. His work was especially noted in the junior squad, which quickly became a panhandle team that other teams didn't want...
POTTER--The 2024 Potter Volunteer Fire Department Firefighters Memorial Golf Tournament was held August 10 at the Prairie Pines Golf Course in Potter. With 17 teams participating this year, three separate flights of golfers were necessary. In the championship flight, a scorecard playoff was necessary as two teams each finished with a score of 44. First place went to the team of Lane Juelfs, Jeff Halley, Mike Halley, and Mark Monheiser, and then second place went to the team of Brandon and...
(NOTE: In the print edition, the result of the game was incorrectly reported as a Firefighter team win. The Police team was able to overcome an early five run deficit and win the game. We apologize for the error.) SIDNEY-- On Saturday afternoon, the annual Guns N Hoses charity softball game pitted the Law Enforcement team against the Firefighter team in a matchup that had egos and pride on the line, but was held to raise money for the Night of Hope Walk for Cancer. Capping off the finish of the early morning run was a cup of cold chocolate milk for each competitor, a staple and "swear by" of longtime Coach, Donna Wiedeburg. Creating a competitive and compassionate environment for her runners, Wiedeburg now shares her accomplishments with one of Sidney's...
