Peetz squads split with Haxtun

PEETZ, Colo. — Peetz High School’s basketball teams split a boys-girls doubleheader Tuesday night with visiting Haxtun.

The Lady Bulldogs posted a 32-25 win, using an 11-2 third-quarter scoring edge.

Melissa Schumacher led Peetz with 13 points, with Mikenna Curlee adding six points. Beth Berhardt had seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

In the boys game, Peetz hung tough with Haxtun, but the visitors pulled away for a 70-63 win, breaking a 53-all tie after three periods.

“Haxtun is a very good team,” PHS coach Bill Fiscus said. “They will compete for the 2A title (in Colorado). If we continue to play with this type of intensity, we will be a tough team to beat.”

Josh Fiscus led Peetz with 25 points, but 19 of those came in the first half. In the second half, Tom Karnik took over and scored 14 of his 16 points. Troy Clevenger added eight points and 15 rebounds, and Austin Crane also had eight points.

Both teams play Friday at Pawnee, then travel to Prairie for Saturday evening games.
