Leyton Warriors keep rolling along

DALTON — After winning the Minuteman Activities Conference championship Saturday evening, Leyton High School’s boys’ basketball team could have been excused if it suffered a letdown.

However, there was no such thing Tuesday night, as Gary Oltmann’s Warriors improved to 11-1 with a 60-36 victory against in-county rival Potter-Dix.

Brennen Cruise led a triumvirate of Warriors in double figures, racking up 17 points to lead all scorers. Cruise and Chris Melzer both had seven points in the first quarter, where LHS grabbed a 24-9 lead.

Ahead 32-16 at intermission, Leyton then outscored P-D 18-9 in the third frame — Cruise added eight more points during the quarter — to seize a 50-25 command.

Bryant Knigge, who’s been on a scoring streak as of late for P-D, paced the Coyotes with 13 points.

Cody McKay and Melzer both added 10 points to Leyton’s cause.

Since losing Jan. 8 to Bridgeport, the Warriors have won their last three games by an average of 27 points.

Both teams are back in action Friday: Leyton hosts Minatare and P-D is at home to meet Banner County.
