Short-handed Chadron staves off Lady Raiders’ late ralley

These are extremely golden times for Chadron High School’s girls’ basketball program, and of a good team, certain qualities are revealed. Sidney’s Lady Raiders saw it first-hand Friday evening at Sidney Middle School.

Minus leading scorer Ashlea Kerr, who sat out after suffering a hyperextended knee, Chadron was still able to eke out a 45-42 victory.

Trailing 19-17 at halftime, Chadron hit a whopping 8 of 10 third-period – good for a 19-8 move that gave the Cardinals (19-2) a 36-27 lead at the start of the third period.

And even though Sidney (14-6) was able to put up a stern rally down the stretch, Chadron did what it had to in order to hang on to beat the Raiders for the third time this season.

“That’s just the mark of a good team,” Sidney coach Tyler Shaw said. “They were able to come out hot in the third quarter, and got some bunnies. As for us, we hurried a few shots here and there, and we just got ourselves into a big hole there.”

Chadron came out strong in the third period, scoring on layups from Bailea Kerr- Ashlea’s twin sister - and Briley Hannaford to give Chadron a 21-19 lead it would not surrender.

Sidney began rushing its offense, and with Kerr and Alia Brennan working the boards for Chadron, the Cardinals were able to pile on for a bit.

B. Kerr, Alia Brennan and Ashlyn Eitemiller each had two points each, and freshman Jayden Garrett knocked down a 3-pointer to punch the Cardinals’ lead to nine at the third stop.

Sidney tried to cut into the lead on the strength of senior guard Sarah Mahr, who scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the fourth period.

The Raiders were able to surge by hitting their free throws. Mahr hit seven in a row, her final pair making it 43-42 with just over a minute remaining.

That’s when Kylee Price came up with a steal and fed Karissa Segelke, who was fouled on a drive to the basket at 1:04. With a chance to tie or give her team the lead, Segelke missed both attempts.

Another chance ended when the Raiders lost the handle on the basketball, leaving the hosts to foul the Cardinals.

Hannaford made one free throw at 21.7 seconds, and B. Kerr iced things with another freebie at 9.6 seconds.

B.Kerr scored 13 points, almost twice her average, and Hannaford pitched in 12 and Brennan 9. B. Kerr and Brennan were a combined 10 of 14 from the floor.

Mahr (18 points) and Jeni Heeren (10) were the lone Lady Raiders in twin digits.

“Mahr works extremely hard, and she had a great fourth quarter for us,” Shaw said.

Sidney trailed just once in the first half, where the Lady Raiders were able to keep their heads above water despite making just one field goal in the second period.

Segelke and Heeren both put in seven first-half points, with the latter burying a 3-pointer out of the left corner as SHS preserved a 19-17 halftime advantage.

Sidney plays this afternoon at Mitchell, weather permitting.
