Holiday fireworks show set for Wednesday

Fourth of July fireworks will light up Sidney skies—on the third.

The city's display will start at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, said Fire Chief Keith Stone. The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department coordinates and puts on the show every year. The department usually has around 18 to 24 volunteers working to make the production the best it can be for the community.

Department volunteers light the fireworks from just off of College Drive by Western Nebraska Community College. The City of Sidney pays for the show.

Those who want a good view might watch from Fort Sidney Road or from the Cabela's store parking lot, Stone said.

"I'm not sure, I've never watched it before," added the man responsible for safety during the program. Since Stone always helps with the show, he never gets to observe it.

He wants to remind those setting off their own fireworks to be careful.

"We're just asking that kids have adult supervision," Stone said.

All City of Sidney offices will be closed July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Closures include the library, the landfill and all scheduled and dial-a-ride bus services. Trash normally collected on Thursday will be picked up Wednesday.
