Sidney again earns Tree City designation

Tree giveaway, demonstration planned for April 26

Earlier this week, Sidney renewed its commitment to a tree-filled community.

Park superintendent Tom Von Seggern represented the Sidney tree board at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

“The tree board would encourage the council to promote tree planting in our many new developments to establish a tree canopy that can be enjoyed by future generations as well as we move forward with our many developments,” Von Seggern said.

On April 2 Sidney received its Tree City USA designation for the 28th year in a row. Tree City USA status is designated by the Arbor Day foundation and is based on sound urban forestry management practices.

With the date coming up on April 25, Von Seggern read the city’s Arbor Day proclamation to the council.

Arbor day was founded in 1872 with J. Sterling Morton’s proposal to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture for a special day of tree planting. The first day saw the planting of more than one million trees in the state. Since then, the day has spread through the country and the world.

“Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife,” Von Seggern said.

Trees are also an excellent renewable resource providing paper, building material and increasing property values. The city promised a renewed commitment to tree planting in Sidney.

“I urge all citizens to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands and support our city’s urban forestry program,” Von Seggern said. “Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the wellbeing of present and future generations.”

The city’s tree giveaway will take place at Lodgepole Valley Youth Camp Saturday Apr. 26. The gates will open at 7 a.m. and the program begins at 8 a.m. with a flag presentation and guest speaker Amy Seiler of the Nebraska Forest Service out of Scottsbluff, who will demonstrate planting a tree.

The city is prepared to hand out almost 90 trees that day.
