Groundbreakings, store openings to mark a busy month

May is looking to be an eventful month in Sidney and the surrounding areas.

On Tuesday Sidney Regional Medical Center's board of directors officially approved the construction of its new $53 million facility. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on May 28 at 9 a.m. at the new building's 40 acre site.

"The new hospital is an important milestone in our goal to provide the finest quality healthcare to those members in the southwestern panhandle of Nebraska," said SRMC board chairman Bill Pile in a press statement. "Reaching this point is very exciting for everyone involved."

The new facility will be located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Greenwood Rd and the street currently named Virginia Ln. Virginia Ln. will soon connect to Toledo St., and both will be re-named Pole Creek Crossing from 10th Ave. east.

The architecture firm of Leo Daly worked with medical professionals and contractors to design the new medical facility. The firm focused on the present and future needs of the surrounding area when designing the building.

Project One, out of Denver, will manage the project. Saunders Construction will complete the building construction.

The new building will feature 25 private acute care rooms, four intensive care beds and three high tech surgical suites as well as a formal helicopter pad.

"The new hospital is designed with a more user friendly layout and supports our mission to provide our patients with the very best healthcare possible," SRMC chief of staff Dr. Mandy Shaw said in the statement. "We also have more exam rooms and additional providers joining the team to address the community's healthcare needs."

The hospital hopes to have the new facility finished by fall 2015. The project is entirely privately funded by the hospital.

In addition to the hospital groundbreaking, some new businesses will open their doors for the first time in May. The Sonic drive-in restaurant located at 500 Glover Rd. plans to open May 12.

"We've found a great location for a new Sonic Drive-In and are happy to announce the grand opening is just around the corner," said Jacques Grondin, regional vice president for Sonic in an April press release.

The company plans to hire 100 employees for the location. The restaurant will be operated by Monte Ford, who currently runs 10 Sonics in Colorado and Nebraska.

Also taking place this month is the grand opening of Bell Pole and Lumber on May 8. The Bell plant was constructed in Adams Industries business park, northwest of Sidney at 9965 Rd. 34. The $25 million utility pole treatment plant sits on about 40 acres.

The City of Sidney, the Village of Potter, Bell Pole and Lumber and Adams Industries worked together on development of this project.

Bell originally planned to be open and operational by summer 2013, but pushed back the start date several times. The Bell opening will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with a ribbon cutting and short program at noon. Tours of the facility will be available throughout the day.

The Salvation Army will hold a grand opening at its new location on May 12. The store will open its doors at 8 a.m. that day. The store is moving from its present location at 932 10th Ave. to 2032 Illinois St.
