Donations help veterans office purchase van, provide transportation

Area veterans have reliable transportation to doctor appointments thanks to the charity of many local organizations.

Through donations from local charities, veterans themselves and all the county service organizations the Cheyenne County Veterans Service Office purchased a van for the price of $28,500 to transport panhandle veterans to doctor appointments in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The office also received a grant for the van from the Columbia Trust.

On Tuesday, the Cheyenne County Ladies Chamber presented a check to the Veterans Service Office for more than $900 in dress down funds to be put toward the purchase and maintenance of the van. The office's old van, purchased in 2004, accumulated more than 300,000 miles.

"It is very important because we provide transportation to the Cheyenne VA medical center to see providers and special needs care," said Cheyenne County Veterans Service Officer Ron Gusman.

The veterans would have to find some other way to travel to Cheyenne if the office did not provide this service, he pointed out.

The van travels to Cheyenne on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The office currently utilizes the services of eight volunteer drivers, but is always looking for more volunteers, Gusman said. The office transports veterans from Deuel County, Morril County, Kimball County and northern Colorado.

Area businesses participate in dress down days on the third Friday of each month.
