BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Leyton rolls by Hay Springs

The Leyton Warriors boys’ basketball team advanced past .500 with a convincing 59-28 victory over the Hay Springs Hawks in a non-district matchup Saturday afternoon in Dalton.

The Warriors (5-5) jumped on the Hawks (1-6) from the start as they opened up with an 18-4 first quarter lead and never looked back. By halftime Leyton’s advantage had reached 34-13.

Sophomore Drew Brenner led all scorers with 18 points which included 4 three pointers. Cody McKay and Zach Hellie also reached double figures with 14 and 12 respectively.

The Warriors have a tough challenge on Tuesday when they welcome a strong Bridgeport team to Dalton. The Bulldogs, who play in Class C2 District 12, are 8-2.

Minatare 52,

Creek Valley 28

The Minatare Indians remained perfect at 6-0 after toppling the Creek Valley Storm 52-28 in non-district boys’ baskeball action on Saturday in Chappell. The Storm’s record dropped to 3-5.

Colin Brott was high man for the Storm with 11 points while Brett Godfrey and Roy Koch added seven and five points respectively.

Peetz 84, Briggsdale 45

Merino 72, Peetz 62

The Peetz Bulldogs (6-3) boys’ basketball team split a pair of games over the weekend to bring their season mark to 6-3.

Peetz started off on the right foot with an 84-45 road win over league opponent Briggsdale 84-45. Back home on Saturday, the Merino Rams, won 72-62. Merino is where the Bulldogs’ freshman standout from 2014 Tre Lewis transferred last year.

“This was a good game for us in that we were outsized and had to battle,” said Bulldogs’ coach Jim Gardiner of the Merino game.

Casey Barrett led the ‘Dogs in scoring with 27 points including seven three pointers. Cody Wilson also had a strong night with 12 points and nine rebounds. Garrin Cox hit for 11 points.

The Falcons proved no match for Peetz on Friday as 12 Bulldogs scored. Cox led the way with 16 points while Wilson had 15.
