Basketball success equals two days off for all Sidney students

The success of the Sidney High School boys’ basketball team translates into a few extra days off from school next week for all students.

With the Red Raiders playing in the Class B State Tournament beginning next Thursday in Lincoln, school has been canceled for all grades on Thursday and Friday.

“As in the past school will be out so people have the best opportunity we can give to attend and support our team,” said Sidney Schools Superintendent Jay Ehler in an email sent on Wednesday afternoon. “We often get the concern that putting activities ahead of academics is not what is best. First and foremost I want to let all people know that academic learning will always be the first priority for our students. We take learning very seriously!

“With that said, we also believe that the benefits of school do go beyond the classroom walls and we want our kids to have the total experience,” Ehler added. “We also want our community to support our activities the way Sidney has in the past. Teachers and coaches are some of the best supporters of these programs and many will attend.”

The Cool Kids Club will be open both Thursday and Friday, Ehler said.

Ehler said that an additional 8 to 12 days are built into the school calendar to accommodate such things as snow days and state competitions.

“If we have a year with no snow days and no football, volleyball or basketball qualifiers, then our students would get academic learning opportunities that are far above minimums,” Ehler said.

The days off meant the district had to do some juggling with the parent-teacher conferences that are planned for next week.

The conferences have been shifted to Monday and Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. each day instead of the original Tuesday-Wednesday plan. All grades will have an early dismissal on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Sidney will take on Scottsbluff in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday, March 12 at 10:45 a.m. CDT at University of Nebraska’s Pinnacle Bank Arena. A victory would put the Red Raiders in the semifinals at 2 p.m. CDT on Friday. The championship game is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. CDT.
