Road activity update at Monday's Commissioners meeting

A road activity update was presented by County Highway Superintendent Doug Hart at Monday’s regular Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners meeting.

In the meeting Hart discussed future plans to repave the asphalt pad located at the fairgrounds. The pad is primarily used by the Oktoberfest committee for its annual event.

Hart said an asphalt overlay would cost an estimated $28,000 as opposed to a concrete one that would run about $22,500.

“The concrete would hold up much better,” County Commissioner Philip Sanders said.

Due to the cost, ideas were discussed about laying the project out over a period of time. The topic was moved for further discussion at the Oktoberfest Committee meeting.

“This might be something we can work together on,” County Commissioner Darrell Johnson said.

Johnson requested an update on County Road 46 east of Gurley, stating he had multiple complaints about the condition of the road. Johnson said there is an area of the road where the asphalt was not ground down completely when the road underwent an asphalt overlay, resulting in a hazardous driving condition.

In the meeting, Hart discussed different options to fix the Road 46 problem, adding that County Road 8 was currently the main focus of the road crew.

Hart said the road crew has been hauling dirt and running scrapers over the roads to fix the problem.

“The rain South of Lorenzo has caused a lot of wash outs,” Hrt said.

In the meeting Hart said he was in the process of looking for a sloper that would aid in the clean up of the weeds along the county roads.

Sanders said “We need to do something about the weeds or they are going to get way from us.”

The rain was a big factor in the current road conditions both with the wash outs and adding to the weed problem.

“We have been doing a lot of catch up on all of the roads that need repair and maintenance, the rain is both delaying the process and causing more road problems,” Hart said.
