Council considers changes to laws on alcoholic beverages

Sidney’s City Council is considering an amendment to the city’s liquor laws, including one change regarding consumption of liquor on city-owned property. An ordinance to alter the code was introduced on first reading at the Jan. 10 council meeting, and will come back before the council for a second look Jan. 24.

Sidney Chief of Police Joe Aikens said the proposed legislation would clean up the current code regarding alcohol.

“Our purpose is to clean up the ordinances; some of them are outdated, don’t apply anymore, so we are trying to bring those up to modern times,” Aikens said.

One addition to the laws would allow the city manager to, in the process of approving special events in town, authorize groups to consume alcohol on some city property, Aikens said.

Currently, alcohol consumption is prohibited on all city property, including city parks and city buildings. The proposed change would allow a citizen to apply for a permit to allow drinking with city approval.

The intent would not be to allow consumption at the softball and soccer fields.
