Car Bowl to Fill Potter Streets with Activity

Potter's streets will be filled to the brim with activities this weekend as the 5th Annual Potter Car Bowl gets underway.

For those who can't wait until Friday night's official kickoff, they can see the first of three melodrama productions of "The History of Dating," performed by thespians from across the southern Panhandle. The show will take a look at dating practices from cave men to the internet. The show begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Potter Legion building, with food available beginning at 6.

That show, plus an evening concert and fireworks, are Friday. That evening's events begin at 6 p.m., when car show participants begin rolling in to register. At the same time, gourmet hot dogs and hamburgers will be ready, followed by the show, a street concert and fireworks.

Car registration continues at 9 a.m. Saturday when the town really gets jumping. That's when fans of mechanized power will be able to see the likes of a 1969 GTO Judge, Ford Mustangs of various years, motorcycles, and even Massey Ferguson 1010 Tractor.

During the morning, until 10:30, kids from 3 to 93 can also register for a Pinewood Derby - then build their cars before a 1 p.m. race start - or, according to one of the organizers, Drew Enevoldsen, dust off their old pinewood cars for one more run.

Also on slate are a BBQ Contest, a Duck Pine Bowling Tournament and a Beer and Wine Tasting, interspersed in activities through the center of town.

Much of the activity is focused on raising funds toward rejuvenation of the Legion Building and its ornate 100-year-old set of curtains. Capping off those activities will be an auction, featuring a 2012 GT250 motorcycle donated by Workhorse Automotive.

Festivities close with one last street concern, followed by another feast and the final melodrama production.
