Lady Raiders Roll Into Sub-District

Sidney’s Lady Raider Volleyball team continued to win heading into the B-8 Subdistrict Tournament in Sidney scheduled to start Tuesday Oct. 29.

On Tuesday Oct. 22, the Lady Raiders traveled north to face the Gering Lady Bulldogs for the second time this season. Sidney defeated Gering in straight sets when they faced off on Sept. 26, and started strong in their second meeting taking the first set 25-to-19. The Lady Bulldogs tightened their defense but still could not overcome Sidney’s big hitters and dropped the second set 25-to-22. Sidney rode the momentum and opened a lead and pulled away in the third set for a 25-to-17 set win for a 3-to-0 match victory. Senior Mattie Johnson and junior Logan Holly led the offense with 14 and 11 kills respectively, while senior Nicole Birner steered the attack with 28 assists in the match.

The girls then traveled to Sterling, Colo., on Saturday for tournament play, and went undefeated winning six straight sets against Prairie, Platte Valley and DSST:Byers. Sidney started by overpowering Prairie 25-to-11 and 25-to-19 with sophomore Alecca Campbell registering two blocked shots in the match. Next up was Platte Valley, and Sidney’s hitters were too much for the Lady Broncos as the Lady Raiders swept the sets 25-to-17 and 27-to-19. Senior Sarah Wamsley had 11 digs and 12 service receptions in the match. Sidney then faced an overmatched DSST:Byers team and quickly defeated the Lady Falcons 25-to-8 and 25-to-14 for the match win. Nicole Birner had 4 aces and 11 assists in the victory.

Sidney next faces Scottsbluff in the first round of the B-8 Subdistrict Tournament on Tuesday in Sidney. Sidney enters the tournament with a 29-and-3 record against a Scottsbluff team with a 10-and-25 record that was overpowered by the Lady Raiders the first two times the teams met this season. The winner of Tuesday’s match will meet the winner of the Alliance versus Gering match for the Subdistrict title on Wednesday at the Cabela’s Athletic Center.
