WarCats End Season With Win

Sophomore quarterback Scout Gamble passed for two touchdowns and sophomore Kole Bush ran for three touchdowns as the Leyton/Banner County WarCats 8-Man football team finished their season on a positive note, getting their first win 36-to-22 on the road against the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos Friday night.

The WarCats had struggled all year finishing drives and stopping the big play, but the offense was able to convert drives for points, and led the Broncos 18-to-14 at the half.

Both teams struggled for points in the third quarter as the defenses took over, and the Broncos trailed 24-and-22 going into the final quarter.

The Broncos could not stop Bush, as he gained 121 yards on the ground, and freshman Justin Ernest hauled in two touchdowns to bring home the WarCats first victory of the season by a final score of 36-to-22. Junior Zac Henke led the defense with 20 total tackles, followed by sophomore Braydon Haley with 18.

Leyton/Banner County Head Coach Glen Lipska commented after the game, saying, ”This win was big for us to end the season. I thought all the players stepped up their level of play Friday night against Wauneta-Palisade, and they had the mind-set and determination to be the victor.

The win-loss column didn’t show the success of the season as I saw the transformation of many individuals levels of play mature as the season went on. As a young team, you want to improve week by week and stay on that path of getting better. Hopefully, this win will give us a springboard into next year and the future.”

The victory will definitely give some momentum to the young team, with the majority of the roster returning after a year of playing together and learning the system. The WarCats finish their season with a 1-and-7 record.
