Logan County Man Dies in Truck-Train Accident

A Logan County, Colo., man died and the train conductor and engineer were transported to Sterling Regional Medical Center Friday when a train and truck-trailer collided near Peetz.

According to Colorado State Patrol Public Information Officer Trooper Josh Lewis, authorities were contacted about 5:05 p.m. Friday of the collision. Trooper Lewis said the truck, a 2020 Freightliner driver by David McKnight, 43, of Peetz, was westbound on Logan County Road 74 approaching the railroad crossing. Trooper Lewis said McKnight stopped the truck-trailer at the crossing, then entered the crossing and the train collided with the truck, pushing the truck-trailer about 300 feet from the point of impact.

McKnight died at the scene. Lewis said train operators transported to Sterling Regional Medical Center were not injured.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe coal train was southbound when the accident occurred.
