School Board Starts New Year with Short Meeting

The Cheyenne County School District No. 1 Board of Education started the 2020 year honoring students and appointing board positions.

The board meeting started with recognition of the Academic All-State award winners for fall activities. Those recognized include Cole Glanz (football); Ben Bashtovoi and Daniel Bashtovoi (boys cross country); Taighlor Arnett and Lydia Peters (girls cross country); Amanda Beier and Ashlee Ringleman (girls golf); Mattie Johnson and Nicole Birner (volleyball) and Hannah Ernst and Elly Weimer (play production).

The board also recognized the December students of the month.

Students of the month are selected based on their academic performance, improvement in classwork, attitude in the classroom; exceptional work effort toward a particular class project; contribution to a class project; leadership displayed; and service to the school.

In the financial reports, Superintendent Jay Ehler said the District has received 38.72 percent of property tax revenue, compared to about 35 percent for the same period in 2019. Ehler cautioned that the District is budgeting less property tax revenue this year than in 2018-2019. Property tax revenue requested for 2020 is a little more than $6.9 million, compared to $7.5 million for the previous year.

The board also approved board officers for the calendar year. Tom Von Seggern will remain as board president with Brenda Smith returning as vice-president. Deanna Kantor will continue as the board secretary with Cindy Heilbrun as treasurer.

The board also approved board committees. Board member Mike Palmer was appointed as a member of the finance committee and Von Seggern took Palmer’s place as alternate. Brad Kennedy retains his position as the board’s public relations representative.

The board also approved designated depositories for District funds.

The board approved a modest increase for substitute teacher pay. Pay will increase to $112 per day for short-term assignments and $120 per day for long-term assignments.

The board also approved the resignation of Rochelle Sadler and Marcuse Ehrke, and teaching contracts for Maria Gillham, Caroline Russel and Kristen Nienhueser.
