Potter-Dix freshman Luke Kasten was the offensive spark of the Coyote team this year, and looks to lead the team to success in the coming years at Potter-Dix.
Potter-Dix was paired against the Arthur County Wolves on February 24 to start the D2-11 Subdistrict Tournament in Ogallala, and the Wolves team that had struggled all season with just two wins gave the Coyotes a contest.
Arthur County's Bryce Hanna dropped two three pointers in the first quarter to keep the Wolves close, and Arthur County led 16-to-14 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter had the teams battling, with Potter-Dix falling further behind to start the quarter, then catching up as the period progressed. But the Wolves kept fighting back, and held off the Coyotes charge. Potter-Dix was able to take a 30-to-29 lead into the half, then slowly increased the lead during the third quarter, with freshman Luke Kasten and senior Terell Gray leading the offense. Potter-Dix opened an 11 point lead by the end of the quarter, and the Coyotes continued to answer the Wolves' scores in the fourth period, and cruised to a 71-to-57 victory.
The win advanced the Coyotes to the semi-final game against number one seed Hyannis, and the teams got an extra day's rest as the game needed to be pushed back a day due to the snowstorm on Tuesday. The Coyotes started with a strong defensive effort, holding the Longhorns to just six points in the first quarter. The defensive battle continued with both teams struggling to score, and the low-scoring half ended with Potter-Dix trailing by two, 14-to-12. The defenses continued to dominate in the third quarter, with Hyannis increasing their lead in the beginning of the quarter while Potter-Dix closed the gap to only trail by four at the end of the third quarter, 26-to-22. The Coyotes tied the score at 26 early in the fourth quarter, but Hyannis responded by again pulling away. The Longhorns' standout Liam Kostman caught fire down the stretch, scoring 13 points in the quarter to extend the Longhorns' lead.
Potter-Dix fought to close the gap again, but could not stop Hyannis from scoring and the Longhorns ended the game with a 44-to-37 victory. Kasten led the Coyote scoring with 15 points, and sophomore Anthony Tovar had 10 points in the loss.The loss ended the Coyotes season with a 6-and-15 record.
