Potter American Legion Girl State 2020

The Potter American Legion Auxiliary Unit to Potter Post #291 has selected Mary Kasten, daughter of Jason and Amanda Kasten, and MiKayla Lee, daughter of Rob and Toni Lee, to attend the 2020 Cornhusker Girls State session in Lincoln on May 31 to June 6, 2020.

Mary’s school activities are volleyball, basketball, track, one act plays, speech, band, choir, swing choir, quiz bowl, FFA, FCA, peer tutoring and class officer. Mary volunteered at the Art Loft, helped with the Youth involved In Potter program, Children’s Theater, Church youth group, put together quilts for Service men and women, handed out Christmas presents to residents at the Hot Springs, South Dakota State Veteran’s Home, helped run bingo games at the State Home, made and distributed popcorn at the Hot Springs VA Hospital, and other volunteer work at South Dakota Legion Auxiliary events.

MiKalyla’s school activities have been band, choir, volleyball, basketball, track, student council, and yearbook. Her volunteer activities included landscaping at the school, helped at the Car Show in Potter, helped at the Dix Volunteer Fire Department, youth volleyball and basketball and have helped elderly woman around the house.

Organizations helping to send Mary and MiKayla to Girls State are: Clara Barton Tent 29 Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865; Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Social Neighbors Club.

Delegates attending the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State will study local, county and state government processes in this nonpartisan experience. They will receive special instruction in parliamentary procedure and organize themselves into two mythical political parties.
