Warriors Lose Third Straight, 46-12

Leyton’s Warrior Football team, after opening with five straight wins, was hit hard by injuries and limped through the remaining games on their schedule, losing all three to end their regular season record at 5-and-3. On Friday the Warriors hosted the Garden County Eagles, and fell behind early and were unable to recover, losing by a final score of 46-to-12. With the win, the Eagles clinched the D2-10 district title.

Garden County racked up 14 points in the first quarter while shutting down the Warrior’s attack, and scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 26-to-0 at the half. Leyton was able to score two touchdowns in the second half, one on a reception by senior Zack Henke and the other on a fumble return by junior Brenton Abbott, but it was too little, too late for the Leyton squad as Garden County brought in the substitutes and ran out the clock for the victory.

Leyton junior quarterback Scout Gamble completed 11 passes for 89 yards with a touchdown and an interception while senior Dominick Russ led the rushing attack with 30 yards on 10 carries. Junior Brayden Haley led the defense with seven total tackles in the loss.

Leyton travels to match up against the 7-and-1 Loomis Wolves in the first round of the NSAA D2 State Football Championship Tournament. Leyton has never faced Loomis before, and the Wolves are coming off a 54-to-28 home win against the Brady Eagles.
