Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrests

On Thursday, March 4, at approximately 4:45 pm, Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office Deputy Bobby B. Martinez was on regular duty conducting patrol operations traveling westbound on King Street in Sidney.

Deputy Martinez observed a white four-door sedan traveling eastbound on King Street near 11th Avenue.  He observed the sedan run the stop sign at the intersection of 10th Avenue and King Street at a high rate of speed.  The sedan then turned and headed southbound on 10th Avenue.  Deputy Martinez then observed the same white four-door sedan dangerously pass a pickup truck in the median.

Deputy Martinez conducted a traffic stop on the sedan at 10th Avenue and Osage Street.

During the traffic stop, Deputy Martinez requested the assistance of Deputy Collin Hauert and Patrol Service Dog Riggs.

While Deputy Martinez was taking care of the enforcement action for the traffic violation, Deputy Hauert and PSD Riggs conducted an open-air sniff of the sedan.  PSD Riggs alerted and indicated to the presence of illegal narcotics in the vehicle.

Deputy Martinez then conducted a Probable Cause search of the vehicle.

During the search illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia were located.

The driver of the sedan, Jeremy A. Bachtell, received a citation for Stop Sign Violation, Careless Driving, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Marijuana less than one ounce.  He was also arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance, methamphetamine.

A passenger in the sedan, Lorna K. Bachtell, received a citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Marijuana more than one once, less than one pound.  She was also arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance, methamphetamine.

Both are from Sioux Falls, S.D.
