'Pedalers' Get Their Own Corner

The location has the image of an historic filling station when cars were fueled by staff and the latest news could be shared over a glass-bottle of carbonated soda from the Coca-Cola cooler.

The location at 9th and Illinois now serves bicyclists and cycling fans.

Pedaler’s Corner officially opened Friday, March 26, the culmination of a long journey for Doug and Vicky Loghry.

The Loghrys moved to Sidney from the Denver area. Vicky talks about growing up in a neighborhood of mom and pop shops. Her dad wanted to bring the concept to Sidney. When he couldn’t finish his dream, Doug and Vicky carried it on.

“This was his baby. I was just his legwork,” she said.

She said Doug loves the Sidney community. He is a certified bicycle mechanic. They hoped to open when the Tour De Nebraska bike tour included Sidney in its route. Signing contracts and gaining supplies became an issue. It was also their goal to make the location a social destination as much as a retail and service outlet. They wanted the Pedaler’s Corner to give back to the community.

As the store was developing, the coronavirus was announced and supply chains became unpredictable. Even with that, Vicky said, Trek “was phenomenal,” providing them with what they could: parts and accessories even when bicycles were not readily available.

In addition to a variety of road, mountain and hybrid bikes, the Pedaler’s Corner also has e-bikes, a phenomenon that has them working to keep up with demand. They also offer Stastic balance bikes.

Vicky said they are deliberately not carrying cycling clothes, although they can be ordered. They chose not to stock cycling clothes because the Loghrys want cyclists of all levels to be welcome

The Pedaler’s Corner is designed with a fenced courtyard with tables and seating, charging stations and a fire pit. She said the outdoor ambiance is proving its purpose. Couple have taken advantage of the seating for conversations, coffees in the afternoon sun.

Pedaler’s Corner is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
