Putting an End to the Stigma

April has a special significance at Sidney High School. The theme is “86 The Stigma.”

Activities are scheduled throughout the month. A meditation session was scheduled Tuesday during the advisory period,

Today, April 7, there will be a “QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer)” session. This 60 to 90 minute training session teaches youth ages 14 to 18 the three steps that can help prevent a suicide.

On April 12, a 60-minute training called “Talk Saves Lives” will be held at 6 p.m. The session will help understand suicide and ways to help a person in crisis at Western Nebraska Community College. The session will be facilitated by Liz Borgmann.

On April 19 and 21, sessions called “More Than Sad” will be held to teach youth ages 14 through 18 to recognize the signs of depression in themselves and others. It challenges the stigma surrounding depression, and demystifies the treatment process. The April 19 session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.. and the April 21 session at 3:30 p.m. Both session will be held at Western Nebraska Community College in Sidney, 371 College Drive. On April 26, there will be a film and discussion about real college students and the transition from high school to college. The session is planned for 6 p.m. at the WNCC Sidney campus.
