Serving proudly since 1873 as the beautiful Nebraska Panhandle's first newspaper
I have a confession to make. I dodged the draft during the Viet Nam war era.
It was easy to do. All I had to do was call up the Navy recruiter in Anchorage, AK and say, “I want to enlist in the Navy.” A short time later I was safe from the Army, and in Navy boot camp at San Diego, CA.
Five years later I received a medical discharge and joined the ranks of those who are proud to have served our great Nation, the United States of America. The Navy taught me a great many things that I have found useful in the civilian world. As a missile tech one of the first rules we learned was: “Clean it if it’s dirty, oil it if it squeaks, but don’t mess with it if it works.” Sounds logical, doesn’t it?
Currently this type of logic is A.W.O.L. (absent with out leave) from our current national government and from a great many lower levels of government as well. We are on the receiving end of a seemingly endless barrage of new government programs supposedly designed to address various urgent needs. And that list does not include the hand-me-down programs left over from previous administrations!
Ever since the dawn of government (read the Biblical account of the Tower of Babel) human governments have been flailing away at solving various problems. The main difficulty they faced in all that history was in finding the right solution. Nimrod tried to get a solid connection between himself and his god by building a tall enough tower.
Succeeding empires tried to gain control over more and more land and people in an effort to obtain the power to control. In the end they all failed as, sooner or later, someone else with the same idea came along and took control over them.
Today our federal government is attempting to solve social and political problems by throwing more and more money at them. If that isn’t bad enough, they are also creating more and more government rules and regulations to go along with the money that is being wasted.
The current administration is solving(?!?!) poverty by importing undocumented aliens by the thousands at our southern border who will work for smaller paychecks. Additionally, your taxes are going to go higher and higher in order to pay for all of the solar innovations that may (or may not) add enough energy to replace what was provided by coal, oil and nuclear power plants.
Corporations of all sizes will simply increase the price of their goods and services while laying off more and more employees. Then there are the plans to make extraordinarily large portions of America’s land into natural reserves as another scheme to reduce pollution. In order to make these reserves, large portions of the mid west will be depopulated and the ranchers, farmers and small town people will be forcibly evicted. Can you imagine what that will do to the price of food and clothing?
What will all this really accomplish? Among other things, it will give government at all levels unprecedented power and control over you and I. It will lay the foundations for the formation of a totalitarian government that will control every aspect of our lives. Unless stopped, the programs and regulations that are already on the books will be joined with an avalanche of federally instituted and controlled agencies, bureaus, and etcetera that will turn America into another flailing and failing socialist nation. None of the problems we face today require that as the solution.
P.S. If Patrick Henry thought that taxation without representation was bad, he should see how bad it is with representation.
P.P.S The best things that happened when I left the Navy was getting out of California and finding my future wife before I left!
