Fashion Meets Service in Downtown Sidney

When Charlotte & Emerson opened, the vision was to offer a place where female shoppers felt comfortable and had a wide variety of accessories and fashion for a friendly price.

The concept has expanded to include what could be called boutique shopping.

Above the Charlotte & Emerson store is a setting that teenage dreams are made of with a variety of dresses for proms and formal events, and the attention to ensure the dress fits the customer. The atmosphere is a balance of history and elegance. The store is reminiscent of a formal reception room, a ballroom of sorts, with chandeliers, rugs to match the stuffed chairs and historic wood floors. The counter is the former check-in when the second floor was a hotel, years ago in Sidney's history.

The store, the experience, is called Charlotte and Emerson Couture. Charlotte and Emerson Couture presently doesn't promote store hours. It is available by appointment. By appointment means the customer gets more one-on-one attention. The idea started when Sarah Kaiser viewed the second floor of the building with Kay and Dennis Hicks.

“I just had this idea of making it a real feminine place,” she said.

She hopes to expand Charlotte and Emerson Couture to set hours. For now, she stresses the relaxed experience.

The kind of dresses Kaiser offers are found in shopping centers hours in other directions. What she does offer is the environment to encourage a woman to feel beautiful. The size and fashion options, and atmosphere of feminine elegance, define an experience more than a retail relationship. She said if a client sees a dress at another location, she can order it.

“I'm a big fan of touching, feeling,” she said.

She said online shopping offers a price, but to model the dress and feel how it wears is a better experience.

Charlotte and Emerson Couture has been open a little more than a month. The first appointment was Aug. 26.

Kaiser is already planning ahead for local school proms.

“We've been telling designers once you get it (dresses), ship it,” she said.

Kaiser works with World of Prom where designs are unveiled well before the typical prom season.

“We started seeing them come out in already, so we're excited,” she said.

Charlotte and Emerson Couture started ordering prom designs in August. She said the store does all it can to minimize the chance of two girls attending the same prom with the same dress design.

“We don't sell the same dress to the same dance,” Kaiser said.

She is making plans for prom to be an event, not just a dance. High school years are special, she said, and she wants to help create memories. She is also passionate about kids having a place for photographs.

Charlotte and Emerson Couture isn't limited to women. Kaiser said fathers have taken their daughters to buy their homecoming dresses.

While much of the focus has been homecoming and anticipated proms, the store can also service mothers of the bride. The focus for any age is resulting with the woman feeling attractive.

Charlotte and Emerson Couture is accessible just west of the Charlotte and Emerson Boutique on Illinois Street. To set an appointment, call 308- 249-2579, or email [email protected], or see them on Facebook.
