Leyton Sweeps Hay Springs

Leyton’s Warrior Basketball teams hosted the Hay Springs Hawks on Saturday afternoon, and both the girls’ and boys’ teams came away winners on the court.

The girls started off with a tight battle against Hay Springs, but the Leyton defense did a great job in the early going forcing ineffective outside shots, and generating turnovers when the Lady Hawks tried to go inside. The Leyton offense chipped away and built a four point lead at the end of the first quarter, and both defenses turned up the pressure in the second quarter. The low scoring period kept the Lady Warriors in the lead, going into the half up 18-to-11.

But the Lady Hawks put up a furious battle in the second half, matching the Lady Warriors scoring shot for shot, but they were unable to trim the deficit. Both teams battled hard in the fourth quarter, but the Leyton team kept their composure and did not allow the Hay Springs squad to go on any unanswered runs.

The Leyton girls came away with the 50-to-41 victory. Freshman phenom Zaili Bensih again was the offensive catalyst for the team, pouring in 25 points and nailing down three three-point shots in the win. Freshman Shawnee Gamble and sophomore Trinity Beutler were great under the boards, each grabbing 10 rebounds. The Lady Warriors evened their record to 4-and-4 and next travel to Potter to face the Lady Coyotes on Friday.

The boy’s game started out tight, but by the end of the first period, the Warriors were cruising with a lead that was never threatened for the entire contest. Junior Justin Ernest was able to cut through the Hawk’s defense and drive the line seemingly at will while KJ Bush and Dillon Juelfs scored from the field. The defense did a great job of forcing bad shots and generating turnovers, and a big 24 point third quarter sealed the game for the home team.

The Warriors improve to 7-and-1 on the year, and on Friday look to avenge their last second loss to Potter-Dix earlier in the season as they travel for a match up with the Coyotes in Potter.
