Humility is designed to bring order out of chaos. A good character trait, humility simply says what God says and does what God does. And, humility is the root word for ‘humor’. Proverbs 20:24: “A man’s (woman’s, too) steps are of the Lord. How, then, can a man understand (comprehend, decipher) his own way?”
Betty is an amazing pianist, also playing vibra-harp, cow bells and crystal goblets. She currently stages one-woman dramas based on women of the Bible and other Christian figures. Over the years, some 46 young ladies have been mentored under her ministry. Since we can’t be called ‘Timothys’, her protege became ‘Priscillas’.
Several churches gathered to hear Betty speak and honor her excellence in music, mentoring and leadership. Unfortunately, between the time the date was set for the event and the night it took place, Betty fell and broke her wrist. While this was distressing enough, she felt certain that she could not accept this honor without being ‘properly’ dressed. This meant wearing pantyhose. With just one hand working, only a miracle could suffice.
Betty’s pastor husband, volunteered to assist. Thinking one pulled these things on as one would a pair of trousers, Elvin positioned himself behind Betty, on the bed, and in a valiant attempt, reached around Betty to pull the pantyhose upward. “Oh, no,” Betty instructed, “You must gather them up, bringing the toe to the top, then place them over my toe and smooth them up from there.”
Elvin scratched his head. Betty demonstrated ‘gathering’ with her good hand. Elvin sufficiently gathered the pantyhose and reached for Betty’s toe. The pantyhose did not cooperate. Changing his perspective, Elvin tried the same maneuver from the opposite side. Even with Betty’s toe started, the pantyhose stubbornly resisted. “Smooth” did not happen.
Betty then, lay back on the bed with her feet in the air while Elvin strained to coax the pantyhose, without twisting them, so the crotch would seat properly. Between the two of them, the task was, at last, completed. Gratefully, the dress was much more cooperative. Off they went to the banquet.
Betty and Elvin joined hands as the Master of Ceremonies recounted a list of Betty’s various accomplishments. They smiled throughout, for they, and only they, knew what time, courage, effort and strength it had taken to arrive at this particular moment. “Though one may be overpowered, two can withstand, and a threefold cord is not easily broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12
Elvin now lives in Heaven. Betty, aged 92, continues to encourages all ages with humor and humility. “By humility, … are riches and honor and life.” Proverbs 22:4
