Warriors Open With Two Wins

Leyton's Warrior Boys Basketball team opened their season with wins over Kimball and Morrill, both in convincing fashion. Leyton traveled to Kimball Friday night for their season opener, and although the Longhorns squad played better than last year's three-win team, the Warriors wasted no time in building a lead on the Longhorns from the start. With good passing and patience on offense, the Warriors built a 19-to-10 lead at the end of the first period. Kimball played better defense and got better looks at the basket in the second period, keeping pace with the Warriors and going into the half down 30-to-20 and kept scoring while smothering the Leyton offense and generating turnovers. Kimball kept close through the third quarter, entered the fourth quarter down 40-to-27, and tried to rally against the visitors. The Longhorns were able to hit some good shots and score, but they were unable to stop the Leyton squad from responding and adding on points down the stretch, and the Warriors pulled away for a 57-to-39 victory. Seniors Dillon Juelfs and Justin Ernest each had 15 points in the victory.

Next up, the Warriors hosted Morrill on Saturday, who were coming off a big loss to Potter-Dix the previous night. Leyton jumped out fast and turned up the defense, holding the Lions to just seven points in the first half while putting up 31 points of their own. The third period put the game out of reach, as Leyton's tough defense blanketed the Lions, allowing just two points in the quarter while the Warriors tacked on another 10 points of their own. Morrill put up a few points at the end of the game after the contest was out of reach, and Leyton tallied an impressive 47-to-30 victory to start their season at 2-and-0. Juelfs and Ernest again led the scoring for the Warriors.

On Thursday, the Leyton boys will host the 0-and-1 Peetz Bulldogs, coming off a loss to Caliche.
