Five local fire departments tested for certifications in Sidney

SIDNEY – Sidney Fire Department (SVFD) and four other neighboring departments tested for their Firefighter 1 Certifications (FF1) at the SFD Training Facility together earlier this month.

Chadron, Gering, Hemingford and Potter all completed Nebraska State Firefighter 1 certifications with SVFD earlier this month.

The training was conducted by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal Training Division.

FF1 certification consists of: making appropriate knots; donning personal protective equipment – including SCBA and firefighter turnout-gear; understanding the role of a firefighter I in the fire service organization; having a basic understanding of incident command; communicating with the use of radios and telephones during emergency and nonemergency situations; participating as a member of a team while extinguishing vehicle fires; completing exterior and interior Class A fires; ground covering fires; performing vertical and horizontal ventilation; establishing water supply; performing overhaul and salvage operations; and using a variety of fire tools.
