Westco Rallies To Beat Sidney 5-4

Sidney's American Legion Post 17 Baseball team traveled to Alliance over the weekend for tournament play, and the wild weather the Panhandle experienced over the past week made it difficult to play the games, forcing changes in schedules and opponents.

On Saturday, the Sidney boys were able to get an afternoon game in against the Westco Zephyrs 18u team, and with Sidney as the visiting team, Westco's Sabastian Martinez took the mound and put down the Sidney lineup in order to end the top of the first inning. Sidney's Blaine Russell took the mound for the Post 17 team, and gave up two singles then a double to give the Westco team a 2-to-0 lead. Russell recovered , retiring the final two batters to get out of the inning.

Sidney started to get something going in the second, getting two runners on base via an error and hit batsmen, but the Sidney boys were caught in a double play after Russell flied out to center field to end the threat. In the third inning, Sidney's John Meza doubled to center field and Kyle Jaggers reached base on an error. Reid Fiscus then drove home Meza with a single, and Zech Roggasch drove home Jaggers and Fiscus with another single to take the lead, 3-to-2. Patrick McCartney then singled to drive home Roggasch, and Sidney ended the inning with a 4-to-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, two singles and a fielder's choice set up the Westco team, followed by two singles with two outs to drive home three runs and put the Westco team ahead 5-to-4. Martinez continued to pitch and went the whole way, twirling seven innings and giving up three earned runs in the victory. Russell went the whole way for Sidney, pitching six full innings and giving up 10 hits and five runs, with five strikeouts and two walks.

Zech Roggasch had one hit in four at bats and drove in two runs to lead the Sidney offense. John Meza had two hits and a run scored in the loss. The Sidney team will continue to battle opponents and the weather as the season turns towards the July portion of the schedule. The Sidney senior team is scheduled for tournament play in Scottsbluff June 30 through July 2, then host Chadron at Legion Park on Monday, July 3.
