On return from the war, he worked as a lineman for Bell Telephone Co., becoming a central office technician in his 25 years of service with Bell.

In 1969, he and his wife, Mildred Rose (Lockwood) Swanson, purchased the Dalton Telephone Company and operated the company with co-owner Jack Swaim for 30 years.

He served as President of The Nebraska Telephone Association, Cheyenne County Commander of the American Legion, American Legion Post Commander in Sidney and Dalton, President of the Lions Club, member of the Elks Club and Mayor of Dalton.

He was a man God gave the charge to raise four boys. He is survived by three sons, Jerry Lee and wife Mary Swanson, Rex Allen and wife Denise Swanson, Lauren Arden and wife Charlotte Swanson and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, parents, brothers Arden and Lauren Swanson, sister Dorothy Chingren and his eldest son Merle Dean Swanson.
