WNCC Lady Cougars Go 3-1 in Tournament Play

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- The 6th ranked Western Nebraska Community College Lady Cougars traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa on Saturday, August 19 to compete in the Reiver Classic Tournament, and ended the competition with a 3-and-1 record.

The Lady Cougars started their day with strong start, defeating Dodge City Community College 25-17, 25-21, 27-29, 25-15. They next faced number 4 ranked Indian Hill Community College and lost 25-15, 25-19, 25-22.

The opening tournament featured fine play offensively by WNCC, with 51 kills in total. Charli Blackman was outstanding with 14 kills, 13 digs and two aces. Lily Zwart had 11 kills and five digs and Dani Cruz had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Freshman libero Taylor Tyser, the highly rated prospect from Laramie, Wy., also had an outstanding tournament with 18 digs, five assists and an ace serve.

Although the Lady Cougars started strong in the match with Indian Hills, going up 7-to-2 to start the match, the Indian Hills squad was able to maintain their composure and go on scoring runs that the WNCC girls could not counter.

Although the tournament was a success for the Lady Cougars, it did show some areas they needed to work on as they start the season. Overall, a strong showing by WNCC signals a strong season for the Lady Cougars.
