Warriors Split Against Perkins County

Girls Win, Boys Lose in Last Games of 2023

GRANT- Leyton's Warrior Basketball teams closed out 2023 with a split against Perkins County in Grant on Saturday. The girls were able to hold off a late rally for a win while the boys struggled to score after the first quarter, and took the loss.

In the girls' game, the Lady Warriors got off to a fast start, putting up 14 points in the first quarter while holding the Plainswomen to just four points at the end of the first quarter. Perkins County was able to get their offense going in the second quarter, putting up 10 points, but Leyton scored 14 again to take a 28-to-14 lead into the halftime break. The Plainswomen played a much better second half on offense, putting up 14 points against Leyton's 15 in the third quarter cutting the deficit a bit, and a strong rally in the fourth quarter made it look like the Plainswomen had a comeback ready to go. Although they finished strong with 20 points in the final frame, Leyton was able to put up 13 of their own points to hold off the rally, and the Lady Warriors took the victory by a final score of 56-to-48.

In the boys' game, Leyton started well against a strong Perkins County team, matching their scoring. Trailing 12-to-11 at the end of the first period, it looked like the Warriors were going to give the Plainsmen a tough battle, but after the first quarter, the Perkins County defense took over the game, shutting down the Leyton scoring. Perkins County put up another 12 points in the second period against Leyton's 4, and took a 24-to-15 lead into halftime. The third quarter was no better for Leyton, as they struggled to get off shots and Perkins County cruised on offense. Another four points was all the Warriors had to show for the quarter's work, while the Plainsmen piled up 21 points. Leyton could not come back from the deficit, and fell by a final score of 58-to-28.

The Lady Warriors enter the new year with a perfect 8-and-0 record, while the Warriors settled for a 3-and-5 record. The teams are back in action on Thursday, January 4 as they travel to Paxton to the Tiger teams.
