    Four Western Nebraska Community College received $500 veteran's scholarships at a ceremony Thursday morning at the Sidney Municipal Airport. The Veterans Upward Bound program presented two $500 foundation scholarships to Christopher Buckley and Alan Smith. Those were funded through donations to the program via the WNCC Foundation. Richard Weinmaster received his award from the SPC James R. Wolf Memorial Scholarship, while Paul Bennett received a scholarship from Security First Bank of Sidney....

    Sidney head football coach Todd Ekart was hoping for a fast start by his team on Friday night. His Red Raiders didn't disappoint. Just 4 minutes and 22 seconds into its season-finale on the road against winless Gering, Sidney had opened up a 22-point lead. Its offense didn't slow any from there as the Red Raiders scored all of their points in the first half en route to a 48-0 victory.     A former Sidney man faces theft charges after allegedly stealing a fire truck from the National Forest Service in Chadron. Aaron Timmons, 25, was charged with theft by unlawful taking, a class III felony. Timmons previously lived in Sidney, but had moved to Moberly, Mo. He had recently returned to Nebraska to be a National Guardsman in Chadron. He is being held on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Cheyenne County Court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 15.     Driving in downtown Sidney has gotten a little easier with the re-opening of another stretch of 10th Avenue. As part of the 10th Avenue Rehabilitation Project, that roadway is now open from Illinois Street to Maple Street.     A Sidney man is in custody after the local drug task force seized 35 marijuana plants it said he was growing on a nearby abandoned farm. Floyd O. Kettle, 53, was charged last week with a count of manufacturing or cultivating of marijuana and two counts of delivery or distribution of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a park.
