  • Lady Raiders fall short to Gering in B-6 semis

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Feb 22, 2013

SCOTTSBLUFF — Sidney High School girls’ basketball coach Tyler Shaw sat solemnly on the bleachers late Thursday evening at Western Nebraska Community College, perhaps trying to replay two or three situations that ended with the Lady Raiders playing for tonight’s Scottsbluff B-6 District championship. But it’s likely that in each scenario, the thoughts simply bounced off, like so many shots did in a mind-blowing, 37-35 semifinal upset loss to Gering. Even though his team’s defense literally... Full story

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — A South African magistrate allowed Oscar Pistorius to go free on bail Friday, capping hearings that foreshadow a dramatic trial in the Valentine’s Day killing of the star athlete’s girlfriend. Pistorius’ family members and supporters shouted “Yes!” when Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair made his decision after a more than 1 hour and 45 minute explanation of his ruling to a packed courtroom. Radio stations and a TV news network in South Africa broadcast the audio of the decision live, and even international channels lik...

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Feb 22, 2013

Down eight points late to Creek Valley in Monday night’s opening-round, the Potter-Dix High School boys’ basketball team probably couldn’t dream the position it is in today. However, Chad Miller’s upstart and fourth-seeded Coyotes completed a sweep at the Sidney D1-12 Subdistrict Thursday by rallying past Crawford 49-44 at Cabela’s Athletic Facility. Bryan Knigge scored six straight points to give P-D (9-13) a 43-42 lead with about a minute left, and the Coyotes were able to hang on at the fo...

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Feb 22, 2013

MITCHELL — While worrying about wild-card point possibilities and the like is all good and fine, Leyton High School boys basketball coach Gary Oltmann would just as soon keep winning — those kind of things have a way of taking care of themselves. The Warriors (20-1) on Thursday night completed their mockery of the Mitchell D2-12 Sub-district with an easy 62-33 win against Sioux County. “I’ll put the sign up tomorrow that we’re in the Sweet Sixteen,” Oltmann said. “If this were the NCAA tournamen...

  • Karl Rove’s new adventure

    Susan Estritch, Syndicated Columnist|Feb 22, 2013

Back in 1985, after being trounced in the general election, Washington strategist Al From and a group of Democratic elected officials founded the Democratic Leadership Council. Its stated purpose was to move the Democratic Party to the middle — particularly to deal with the influence of the ideologues and caucuses (and there were many of them) who dominated the presidential nominating process. Co-founders included then Gov. Bill Clinton, Sen. Sam Nunn and Rep. Dick Gephardt, among others. It was not popular with everyone, including yours t...

  • It's Mines

Tina Mines, Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Feb 22, 2013

First impressions have been on my mind a lot lately, and how much stock most people put into them, more often than not leaving people with a misplaced judgment, because first impressions can be just as misleading as they can be telling. Most people use a first impression to decide what they think about another, often building their future thoughts on the ‘taste’ that person left in their mouth. Whether it be in the way a person talks, their attitude, the way they dress or how they act most people will form and use that first impression as a b...

  • Proposal would change wording in state laws

    Bethany Knipp, Nebraska News Service|Feb 22, 2013

LINCOLN – The offensive term “mentally retarded” would be replaced with “intellectual disability” in Nebraska’s laws under LB343. The Health and Human Services Committee listened to public testimony Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the hearing for the bill, which was introduced by Sen. Colby Coash of Lincoln. In his opening statement, Coash told the committee that it’s time to update the language that was once used by the medical community. “If we didn’t do this from time to time, our statutes would be full of the words ‘idiot’, ‘moron’ and ‘imbecile,’” h...

LINCOLN – The number of new irrigation wells registered in drought-stricken Nebraska last year surged past 1,000 for the first time in seven years, according to preliminary state figures. The Department of Natural Resources reported earlier this week that the 1,105 new wells were the most registered with the state since 2005 and more than 350 more than registered in 2011. Why the jump? “It’s a combination of drought and record commodity prices,” Dave Aiken said Thursday. The agriculture and water law specialist at the University of Nebrask...
