SHS Lady Raiders turn tables in second half at Scottsbluff

SCOTTSBLUFF — It was simply a tale of two nine-point leads, and fortunately for the Sidney High School girls basketball team, it grabbed the latter.

Trailing 29-20 at halftime Saturday afternoon at Scottsbluff, Tyler Shaw’s Lady Raiders ran off a 21-1 surge in the third period that eventually ended with Sidney leading by nine, 43-34, en route to a 59-43 road victory.

“We turned the nine-point deficit into the lead in the first three minutes of the third quarter,” Shaw said. “We finally got the things going that we needed to, and Scottsbluff is always a tough place to play. There was no fear on their part.”

Scottsbluff was able to grab a 19-10 lead after a period.

“Scottsbluff was hitting a lot of shots early, and we only give up like 37 points a game,” Shaw said. “So for them to score 19 in the first quarter, and 29 at the half, was more than we were used to.”

Karissa Segelke got going in the third frame, scoring nine of her game-high 19 points, while Jeni Heeren added six points and Sarah Krueger spiked a 3-pointer to aid the Raiders’ rally.

Scottsbluff, limited to just 14 points after halftime, could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way, as SHS (12-3) pulled away late.

Sarah Mahe came up big once again for Sidney, tossing in 16 points. Heeren and Kreuger both had eight.

Saturday’s win capped a pair of weekend road victories for Sidney, but Shaw realizes his team has two more rough road battled ahead of it this coming weekend, beginning with a trip to Chadron Friday before the Raiders go to Hershey Saturday.

“It won’t be easy,” Shaw said. “We have to get a good week of practice in, and then hit the road two more times.”
