Sidney woman threatens acquaintance with knife

Victoria Thomas, a 43-year-old Sidney woman, was arrested Monday for threatening another resident with a knife. She was charged with disturbing the peace and making terroristic threats.

Sidney Police Officer Chad Borgmann was dispatched to an apartment building June 24 to investigate a woman allegedly making threats. When Borgmann arrived, Kavin Swain told the officer that his neighbor, Thomas, approached him with a knife, according to the police report.

Borgmann gathered from witness statements that Thomas and Swain had been hostile toward one another for around a month. During this particular incident, Swain apparently made an offensive gesture and then she responded with a racial slur. After that, both parties went to the apartment of Douglas Mehring.

In Mehring's apartment, Thomas allegedly continued to refer to Swain in racist terms while on the phone. She then informed Swain that she was planning to go get a knife so she could cut him, according to statements.

Thomas left and returned shortly with a knife. Police reports allege she had the knife open in her hand, but Mehring took it away from her.

Swain immediately left the apartment and called the police.

After taking statements from Swain, Scott Mehring and Douglas Mehring, Officer Borgmann attempted to locate Thomas. Borgmann, with the help of another officer found her in the parking lot of Sonny's Super Foods, on the corner of 10th Ave. and Toledo.

Thomas claimed that she and Swain had an argument, but that she never threatened him. Borgmann then arrested Thomas and charged her with terroristic threats and disturbing the peace, according to the arrest record.

A terroristic threat is when someone threatens another person with the intent of scaring or terrorizing them, said Deputy Cheyenne County Attorney, Jonathon Stellar.
